MEMORIAL WEEKEND UPDATE! Gunter's liquor Whiskey concierge

Howdy Whiskey Concierge Members

Alright ya'll weve got a bourbon drop! see below. A quick story about a couple distillery visits, and an upcoming trip to Andelusia!

It has been a really busy couple of weeks! I had the pleasure of visiting the Old Elk Distillery and the Brush Creek Distillery during my trip to Colorado and Wyoming. The Old Elk is nestled in a walkable downtown shopping area in Fort Collins. It is a really cool lodge style space featuring the entire Old Elk line. I ordered a flight of four grain, double wheat, rye rum finish, and wheat n rye. I really enjoyed all of them. My favorite was the Rye rum cask. It was the best of both worlds. It has a classic rye nose with an extra pop of cinnamon, vanilla, and brown sugar. While it was a really nice space, it was only a bar with a menu and no access to the distillery what so ever. We spent about an hour there and I enjoyed my flight and my wife enjoyed a gin and tonic. I plan on expanding the Old Elk line up over the next few weeks. These whiskeys are really well crafted. While they are Indiana juice, the folks at Old Elk have masterfully worked with the ingredients provided to blend and finish great whiskeys.
The next day we decided to drive 250 miles to the Brush Creek distillery in Wyoming from Denver. We had a very enjoyable drive through the National forests, the foothills, and low rolling plains. We arrived at Brush Creek early afternoon. The distillery sits atop a rolling hill with greenhouses, a large guest and dining facility. There are multiple large lodge style buildings and other structures. The mountains to the west provide epic views from the distillery. Since the distillery is part of a 30,000 acre working guest ranch, trainees for the summer busy season were having training and the ranch was closed to guests. I had called some industry contact and set up the visit. As soon as I stepped out of the car I recognized the Master Distiller who had visited Gunter's last year. I must admit I cannot recall his name! He is a veteran distiller from Stranahans. We spoke for a few minutes and then I met the hospitality director and we started exploring. We went in through the back utility entrance and directly into the distillery work area. There we saw their own mash fermenting, and their still was working away! I am very excited to taste the grain to glass versions once they are aged properly! Brush Creek is currently using MPG distillate to blend and finish their bourbons.  The tasting room is really nice with huge windows into the distillery on one side, and a view of the Wyoming mountains on the other. I tasted through the entire whiskey line up. I really enjoyed the entire line up, however, my favorites are the Railroad Rye, Chimney rock cab finish, and Carboy Cab Franc finish. The Chimney rock and Carboy Cab Franc are distillery exclusives! We then got to try a 15yr bourbon finished in cognac xo straight from the barrel! It was FANTASTIC! Over the next few weeks look for Railroad Rye, and other Brush Creek offerings as soon as they become available.

The good folks over at Andelusia have invited me to bring a few members with me for live instagram feed where we taste, and tour Andelusia! June 14th @ 6PM. Let me know if you are interested in attending!
